Description
As the exclusive Jersey importer for this iconic producer we are delighted to announce the release of the Gaja family’s Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino 2020’s: Brunello di Montalcino, Rennina, and Sugarille..
It is true to say that 2020 was not a uniformly or classically great vintage; hot, but not as dry as 2019 or 2021. However, this was the vintage of COVID restrictions which gave vignerons the time they needed to tend all their vineyards without the workloads of ‘usual’ life. This essentially created the conditions for 2020 to be a vintage where the producer made the biggest difference in the resultant quality of the wines. Not every producer could turn their focus to climate change and heat resistance in a single vintage, and while 2020 may be the turning point that Brunello needed to get away from brittle tannin and imbalanced alcohol in hot vintages, this is where the Gaja family really come into their own.
The Gaja’s have always been incredibly focussed on spending time in their vineyards and understanding the whole ecosystem that their vines thrive in - projects targeted at combatting climate change effects and the increasing number of ‘hot’ vintages have been their focus for many years, like the sensitive addition of organic matter (that has been carefully cultivated by the family) to the soils to give them the ability to retain more water and support the vines in the heat. 2020 is a vintage where the Gaja family were able to reap what they had sown.
This is a vintage where customers should be selective, but by no means should anyone miss out on the spectacular wines that can be found. Eric Guido has stated in his Brunello 2020 article on Vinous that “This is not a vintage to skip, nor is it just a “restaurant vintage.” The successful wines of 2020 are absolutely gorgeous. Readers just need to be selective”.
TASTING:
2020 shares similarities with 2015 and 2016, being generally warm but without extreme temperatures. The production yield is 15% lower than usual. The wines have a notable structure and concentration, with elegant, sweet tannins. They display abundant fruit, balanced acidity, and intense ruby-red hues.
On the nose, notes of ripe fruit such as black cherry and plum blend with citrus, floral, balsamic, and herbal nuances. On the palate, the wine initially delivers tension and freshness, then progresses with a straight, persistent character. It is a juicy wine with a savoury finish and vibrant tannins.
VINOUS 93+ points
“The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina is just a baby in the course of its evolution, understated and coy, with a bouquet of dried black cherries, stone dust and a cascade of violet and lavender florals that emerge only with time in the glass. It displays silken textures and a truly harmonious feel, washing across the palate with ripe red and black fruit scents underscored by crunchy mineral tones and a tinge of balsamic spice. A web of fine-grained tannins wrap the senses with youthful tension as the 2020 finishes long and staining with a pleasantly bitter sensation and hints of mocha that linger on. This may one day deserve a higher score. Bury the Rennina deep in the cellar.” Eric Guido,
JAMES SUCKLING 96 points
“Aromas of dark fruit, mushrooms and rich earth follow through to a full body with creamy, round tannins that are long and beautiful. Deep fruit and a polished, velvety texture. Excellent depth and intensity to this. Drink after 2027.” 96pts, James Suckling, Sep. 24
THE WINE ADVOCATE 94 points
“Made with a blend of fruit from across the estate, the Pieve Santa Restituta 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Rennina offers excellent integration with soft spice and sweet cherry fruit. The wine packs textural richness, and you don't get the dry or desiccated tannins and phenolic pinch that is common in hot growing seasons. Indeed, the tannins here are sweet and well hydrated. There is plenty of fruit to round off a long finish. Rennina ages in oak barrel for 24 months, and 14,000 bottles were created.” Monica Larner
JEB DUNNUCK 94 points
"Pouring a bright ruby/magenta color, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino Renina is generous with fruity aromas of blackberries, red cherries, crushed flowers, polished cedar, and mossy forest earth. Approachable and elegant, the palate is ripe with medium to full-bodied richness, plush tannins, and good length, and it retains crisp, refreshing acidity, with a nice, elegant saltiness. It was just bottled in June, so this was tasted quite early on, but it's going to be ready earlier and drink well over the coming 15 or so years. This wine is a blend of a few vineyards compared to the Sugarille, which is their single vineyard red." Audrey Frick
